Fillings are restorations that are placed into teeth to repair areas that have decayed or may have broken. Usually anesthetic is administered to numb the tooth before a filling is placed. After the tooth is numbed, it is prepared to receive the filling, meaning the decay or other damaged tooth structure is removed. Once the preparation is completed, the filling is placed, shaped and polished. There are different types of filling materials that can be placed: silver amalgam, gold, composite resin, and porcelain. Composite resin and porcelain are both tooth colored whereas the silver amalgam and gold are not. At Simms Family Dentistry, composite resin is the most common material used for fillings. Depending on your situation, Dr. Simms will determine which material is best for you.
