We are big on preventive dentistry at Simms Family Dentistry. Preventing problems is much easier than treating problems when they occur. Below are some preventive recommendations/treatments we provide.
We recommend routine hygiene appointments and exams to help identify problems when they are small or before they occur. Depending on your particular situation, Dr. Simms will determine the frequency with which you should be seen for a hygiene appointment and exam.
In addition to routine hygiene appointments and exam, we recommend sealants on teeth where appropriate. Sealants are a protective resin that is placed over the pits and grooves of your teeth to help prevent decay. By sealing off the irregular pits and grooves of your teeth, it makes the area more cleansable and prevents plaque and bacteria from hiding in these areas where they can cause decay. Typically, first molars erupt around age 6 and sealing them is recommended as soon as they erupt. Sealants area easily placed and only take a few minutes to complete.
Another preventive treatment is fluoride trays. We recommend fluoride trays for people who exhibit a high decay rate. If you are someone who seems to get cavities frequently, fluoride trays may benefit you. Fluoride trays are very similar to bleach trays. A mold is made of your teeth and then used to make a custom fit tray that fits over your teeth. The tray is custom fit so that it can deliver the fluoride to precisely where it needs to be. A prescription fluoride gel will be given to you to wear in the trays.
